Yamuna River rising in New Delhi, a flood threat looms over the national capital with the State Government evacuating people living in low-lying areas to safer places.The water level is likely to rise by at least two meters above the danger mark by Saturday evening following the release of over 800,000 cusecs of water from neighbouring Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage, in addition to heavy rains.Over 100 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed to assist local authorities.
The threat of a severe flood loomed large over the Capital as the Yamuna continued to rise alarmingly on Friday, submerging several low-lying areas. The water level reached 206.08 metres during the evening hours and Delhi government officials monitoring the situation believe it may cross the 206.5 metre mark by Saturday afternoon.
More people are being evacuated from the low-lying areas as reported by a Delhi Government official. He said, “Haryana released 80,000 cusec water this morning and the level of Yamuna is 205.60 metres now.”Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had assured on Thursday that all necessary steps are being taken to cope up with this “serious” situation.
