Mysore founded on August 1, 1963, is one of five such institutions established by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi. The other Institutes are located at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Shillong. The Regional Institutes were started with main objective of qualitative improvement of school education through innovative pre-service and in-service teacher training programmes and relevant research, development and extension activities.
In tune with objectives of the parent organization, NCERT, the institute is involved in numerous activities pertaining to school and teacher education. The main functions of the institute. Developing curriculum and instructional materials, methods of teaching, evolving methods of teaching and evaluation and preparing teaching aids , kits and equipments, learning resource, etc.,
The institute is flanked by several premier educational institutions, including the Manasagangotri, where the PG departments of University of Mysore are situated. The institute is well equipped with modern infrastructure in tune with the requirements of the 21st century. The institute is fully residential and has four hostels – Ganga, Krishna, Cauvery and Narmada with Care and Comfort as its motto. The Godavari Guest house offers a homely atmosphere to the guests visiting our institute.The Institute has staff quarters, play grounds, horticulture nursery, library, audio video studio, computer resource center, teaching aids center, laboratories in different disciplines and botanical as well as zoological museums. The Demonstration School, a prestigious school in Mysore, is one of the units of the Institute. The school serves as an epicenter for trying out new and innovative strategies in curriculum and pedagogy. The campus also has basic service facilities like bank, canteen, health clinic and stationary shop.
