Lord Vishnu is one of the principal Hindu deities and with Brahma “the creator” and Shiva “the destroyer”, constitutes the well-known tri-murti or triad of Hinduism. The Vaishnava sect of Hinduism considers him to be the foremost deity, worthy of total devotion and reverence. This article discusses three mantras for Lord Vishnu – guru mantra, mantra for invocation and mantra for meditation.
There are several great stotras which trace their origin to Puranas. Of these the greatest is possibly the Vishnu Sahasra Namam found in Mahabharatha. Literally translated this means thousand names of Vishnu. This is found in the Anushasanika Parvam (chapter relating to orders or rules to the kings) of Mahabharatha.
In Hindu mythology, it is advised that when you see god and the Guru together, you should first bow your head toward Guru as he is the one who has taught and help you recognize the god. So, the one who helps us in learning, in creating the awareness, has to be given the priority over anyone else.
Bheeshma Pitamaha was defeated and grievously wounded by Arjuna.
